final exam part 2

Last Saturday 19-Year-old, Shoplifting suspect Timothy Milan died. He lived at 1112 Huron Avenue and was employed as a cook at a restaurant in the city. Milan was seen stealing clothes, when confronted he tried making a run for it, store security and 3 bystanders tackled him down holding Milan in the chokehold position to keep him detained.
"The gentleman who held onto Milan was just being a good citizen," says Police spokesman Michael Williams.
"We went outside to see what was going to happen and we saw the boy get dragged to the ground." Eyewitness Sherry Carter explains, "They were fighting alright, but it looked like all four of them were pulling at him and he finally stopped moving."
"My wife and I are just in ruins over this. He was our only child and he had never had problems with the law." Timothy's father, Eric Milan says, "We plan to bring civil charges against the man who did this to my son."
While others are saying they were just trying to restrain him from escaping, many believe that there should be more of public concern that someone was killed while being held down. due to shoplifting.
Police say they will not charge anyone involved with the case with a crime. A police officer who arrived at the scene reported that Milan collapsed as he put handcuffs on him. An autopsy conducted to determine the cause of death revealed that Milan died due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.
"Our lawyers are already filing papers and we encourage the courts to revisit this ruling from a criminal perspective," says Eric Milan.

Opinion piece FINAL

Now that most junior high and high schools require a certain number of hours to be completed each semester or year doing volunteer work and or community service, this creates a torn opinion with the people, I  particularly agree with the people who believe this is forced volunteerism, this is almost exactly what criminals convicted with community service is forced to do due to their wrongdoings, the thing is these are innocent kids. The fact they are being forced to do this to keep going to get an education is sick. I would rather hold meetings persuading to do community service but never force them to do it; they could be doing an extra activity maybe study even, but they cannot due to the schools’ ridiculous requirements, If the people still think it promotes good citizenship why don’t they go on and do it themselves instead of pushing it on the younger generation.
Students are already being forced to study all the time they can, just to meet the education standards. Kids are put under such pressure to score well we forget to give them time to get to know who they are. Now schools are just adding on to the enormous pressure society has for these kids for them to mature. Let the kids play. These kids shouldn’t be doing forced community service to stay in school and avoid disciplinary actions.
To have good citizenship shouldn’t be forced to do work outside of school hours. Other kids have jobs, they need to make money for their car’s gas and some students have to make money to bring to their less fortunate families. Forcing the students to do this would be corrupt, almost like history is repeating itself to a time where the government forced people to work just to receive the gift of education. I understand if you want to be apart of a community at school such as the honors program, but this is not for all students. What good citizenship is shown when a child doesn’t and is being forced to clean the streets of their city.
The people who think this will bring good citizenship should go out and persuade people to do this instead of bringing this up on force and threat of discipline for a kid. If anything it should be adults doing this. Kids should already get cut some slack since the enormous pressure to receive good grades, they undergo an extreme amount of stress constantly studying, now to do community hours?

The man with a golden voice

1. What is the difference between a hard news lead (lede) and the one you read above?
The difference between this lead was that it was sweet and kept the reader engaged comparing to the hard news lead which spits everything you need to know in a factual manner.
2. What paragraph(s) did you learn the following information?
a. Who-2nd paragraph
b. What-3rd and 1st and 5th paragraphs
c. Where-2nd paragraph
d. When- under the title
e. Why- 5th paragraph
f. How-3rd paragraph

3. Are there quotes in this story? Yes.

4. Are those quotes arranged in the "quote-transition" style we used in news writing? Most of them are but there are two next to each other but the next paragraph explains them.

5. Who is quoted in the story?

Patrick Harris
Frank Willson
Shane Cormier
Ton Florentino
Ken Andrews
Ted Williams
Doral Chenoweth III
Kevin McLoughlin

6. What quote is the most powerful in the story, in your opinion?
"I think he really has no idea how big this is going to be."

7. How many paragraphs is the story?
33 paragraphs

8. How many words is the story (hint: you can copy and paste into Word and get a word count)?

765 words.

9. What is significant about the lead (lede) and the final paragraph of the story?

The lead was about how godly his voice was as was the last paragraph, it left most of the information more towards the bottom.

10. Why do you think the writer did that with the lead (lede) and final paragraph?

I felt the author did that to have you truly remember the story and maybe eventually spread it to others.

11. Was the story interesting to read?

yes.

12. When you finished the story, but BEFORE you watched the video, did you want to hear the voice?
I wanted to see what the fuss was about, so yes.
13. Multimedia approaches are powerful tools, what impact did the video have when watched directly after reading the story? I finally understood all the quotes and I was just blown away at how well his voice sounded.

14. Would the story have lost its impact without the video?
To be completely honest, yeah it would have been less impactful if I wasn't able to hear the man's voice.
15. Did the writer try to come up with a way for you to hear the voice, i.e. did he try to describe the voice or give you a way to "hear" the voice without really hearing it?

The writer put recognizable quotes from TV that people would know how it sounds like.

16. How did the writer do that?

The writer used italics to add emphasis.

The man who played the violin

1. Do we perceive beauty?
I think that we view beauty based on our relationship with the art involved, whether it's musical, visual, acted, etc. If your not interested in art of any kind, you might not see the beauty of it.

2. Do we stop to appreciate it?

4. If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

I feel it's based on your current situation as someone might be late/in a rush to get somewhere and I also feel it's based on your surroundings as you may not enjoy a piece of art as much if it were on the curb of a street comparing to an official museum.

3. Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?
I feel like you would have to have a very open mind to enjoy something that was not asked for/not wanted. Most people would rather judge the situation rather than enjoying the talent.
I think we miss plenty of things in life due to something else happening at that moment, although it's unfortunate we simply cannot drop everything to enjoy something that seems common.
